Causes of Nighttime Glare: What are Halos and Glare?
A halo is a phenomenon where light emitted from streetlights or other light sources appears blurry with a hazy circle surrounding the light source like a ring.
After cataract surgery or LASIK, some people become sensitive to glare.
Glare is the phenomenon where light emitted from streetlights, car headlights, or other light sources is bright or appears stretched.
If very bright light enters the eyes, it can sometimes cause an uncomfortable glare sensation.
Symptoms
If you feel glare due to the effects of halos or bright light, you may experience reduced vision at night or eye strain.
Measures / Improvements
- Only wear contact lenses at night to prevent these symptoms.
- Consult an ophthalmologist regarding glare issues after surgery.
- When choosing tinted lenses, try on trial lenses to avoid selecting a color that makes the field of view too dark. *Halos and glare can be reduced but cannot be completely eliminated. *Tinted lenses with light transmission below 75% cannot be used when driving at night and on the road.
