What is prescription tint? How is it different from photochromic glasses & prescription sunglasses?

Explanation of fixed prescription tint: when to use tint for driving, glare reduction, aesthetics; compared to Transitions and prescription sunglasses; safety notes and standard eye measurements.

Prescription tint (fixed tint / colored prescription lenses) are lenses that have a stable color in all lighting conditions — distinctly different from photochromic glasses and also different from prescription sunglasses (usually separate sunglasses lenses with prescription). On the store menu, the prescription tint section targets this product group: suitable when you need a fixed color for driving, mild glare reduction, or style without changing shades according to light.
Not a substitute for medical advice: If you have unusual light sensitivity, headaches in sunlight, or eye conditions — you need to consult a specialist before choosing a dark color yourself.

Three types of “colored prescription glasses” — don’t confuse them

TypeFeaturesSuitable for when
Fixed tint (prescription tint)Color does not change with UVStable favorite color; driving with moderate gray / brown as per optician's guidance
Photochromic (Transitions…)Bright indoors, darkens in sunlightOne pair for multiple environments — see pros and cons of photochromic
Prescription sunglassesSunglasses frame + tinted lensesBright sunlight, beach, driving at noon — usually gray / green / brown standard sunglasses

When should you choose prescription tint?

  1. Daytime driving and you want one pair for work and glare reduction — tint gray / light to medium brown is usually preferred (specific levels suggested by the optician based on prescription and light sensitivity).
  2. Aesthetics / style — light colors (smoky pink, light blue) for fashionable frames.
  3. Mild glare reduction indoors (screens, LED lights) — some users prefer very light tints; need to consider darkness level as it may affect night vision.

Traffic safety & living notes

  • Too dark tint can reduce contrast when it’s dark or in a tunnel.
  • When driving at night, it’s usually not advisable to use dark lenses.
  • People working with colors (printing, retouching) need to test real colors before finalizing.

Choosing popular colors (reference)

  • Gray: reduces glare, minimal color distortion — often used for driving.
  • Brown: increases contrast in some scenes — suitable for some people in bright conditions.
  • Green (G15 style sunglasses): classic style; need to ask about light transmission suitable for laws and driving habits.

Measurement & fitting process

Like all prescription lenses: sphere, cylinder, axis, PD, and with progressive lenses additional height measurements. Tint is usually applied after finalizing the material type (CR-39, poly, high-index…).

Tint darkness: category and real driving experience

Opticians often describe light / medium / dark levels according to % light transmission or category (depending on the lab). Too dark tint indoors can be fatiguing; too light in sunlight can still be glare. Need to test under lights and in sunlight if possible — do not choose just from online photos.

Tint + HUD / bright display

Some cars have HUD or curved screens — tint can cause perceptual distortion; users with polarized lenses may also experience similar phenomena — polarized.

High myopia + dark tint

Thick lens edges can sometimes be more noticeable with dark colors; consider high-index or edge-covering framesmaterials.

Two pairs: clear + tint / sunglasses

Many people choose one pair AR for work and one pair tint / sunglasses for driving — more flexible than one miraculous lens for all situations.

Children and fashion tint

Light tint for style is acceptable, but prioritize correct prescriptions and safetystudents.

FAQ

“Does tint block UV?”Depends on the material and coating; check the catalog — don’t assume. “Tint vs prescription sunglasses?” — Sunglasses usually have better edge coverage; tint is a layer on prescription lenses. “Can progressive lenses be tinted?” — Yes, but sensitive fittingprogressive lenses.

Combine with other articles

If you are unsure between one pair of photochromic and one pair of tint, read which photochromic lenses are good and Transitions Xtractive. Need shatterproof for children — see shatterproof lenses.

Gradient tint and viewing electronic displays

Some people choose darker on top, lighter below to still see watches/computers below — need to balance as the central viewing area when driving can be perceptually skewed. Ask the optician about the light transmission percentage for each area before finalizing.

Doctor / pilot / welder professions

Some professions have regulations about darkness or color of glasses when working — self-selecting tint may not comply with safety procedures. Check unit regulations before cutting — selecting office glasses.

Combining AR with tint

Tint does not replace AR coating; many still need AR in offices with lights even if the lenses are lightly tinted — ask about compatible coating packagesCrizal.

Caring for tinted lenses

Avoid strong alcohol, prolonged heat in cars; wipe in one direction — color can fade if rubbed + chemicals — lens warranty.

Different prescription in each eye + dark tint

Uneven edges are more noticeable with color — consider edge-covering frames or indexhigh myopia.

Clip-on polarized vs fixed tint

Clip-on is convenient when you want clear indoors but need glare reduction outdoors; fixed tint is more stable for specialized sunglassespolarized, Xperio tinted.
